Greene: But That's Another Story

Milton Greene on yksi lempivalokuvaajistani. En ole mikään analyyttinen asiantuntija, mutta Greenen kuvissa on vain sitä jotain, mikä tekee niistä ainutlaatuisia ja tunnistettavia. Enkä tarkoita vain Marilyn-kuvia, vaan Greenen kuvia ylipäänsä.
Siksi miun oli pakko hankkia kirja But That's Another Story. Siinä missä Milton's Marilyn keskittyy nimenomaan Marilyn-kuviin, But That's Another Story esittelee Greenen muitakin kuvia. Marilyn on tietenkin mukana, mutta hän on yksi monista.
Kuvat ovat tietenkin upeita. Milton Greene on kuvannut useita Hollywoodin tähtiä aina Cary Grantista Sophia Loreniin. Lisäksi mukana on muotikuvia, joissa on mielenkiintoisesti leikitelty väreillä ja kuvioilla.

Marilyn sanoi Milton Greenestä, että tämä kuvaa hänet sellaisena kuin hän on. Veikkaan, että tämä pitää paikkansa myös useiden muiden henkilöiden kohdalla. Greene ei toista itseään, vaan onnistuu tavoittamaan jokaisesta kuvattavasta henkilöstä jotain hyvin olennaista.

Milton Greene is one of my favorite photographers. I'm not an expert who loves to analyze photos, but his photos just have that 'special something' that makes them unique and recognizable. I'm not talking only about his Marilyn photos, but his other work as well.
That's the reason why I had to get But That's Another Story. While Milton's Marilyn focuses solely on Greene's work with Marilyn, But That's Another Story shows us Milton's other work as well. Naturally, Marilyn is there too, but as one of many.
The photos are of course gorgeous. Milton Greene has photographed several Hollywood stars from Cary Grant to Sophia Loren. There are also fashion photos. In those photos, Greene often plays with colors and textures in a very interesting way.
The book is a family project. Milton Greene's photos are accompanied by text written by Amy Greene, with foreword by Anthony Greene. The introduction is written by Joshua Greene, who also formed The Archives. You can tell it is a labor of love, one that comes from love and respect towards Milton Greene and his work.
Marilyn said of Milton Greene that his photos show her as she is. I believe that this can be applied to several other people he photographed. Greene doesn't repeat himself, but manages to always capture something very essential about his subject.
There's a whole chapter about Marilyn in But That's Another Story, so she is featured more than any other individual. There's a reason for this: Marilyn was also a friend of the Greene family. She lived with them in Connecticut after leaving Hollywood behind in the end of 1954.
Milton Greene's photos are simply amazing, and the book does justice to them. I'm left with one thought: who would Milton Greene photograph today, and how?
