Cursum Perficio on siitä ihana kirja, että sitä lukiessa todella tulee sellainen olo, kuin olisi Marilynin vieraana Brentwoodissa. Tutustutaan taloon, ostetaan huonekaluja, suunnitellaan remonttia, kävellään puutarhassa. Kuvien perusteella 12305 5th Helena Drive on uskomattoman kaunis ja varsin yksinkertainen talo maailmanluokan elokuvatähdelle. Taloa on tietenkin remontoitu Marilynin jälkeen, mutta jos haluaa saada kuvan siitä, millainen talo oli hänen aikanaan, Cursum Perficio on korvaamaton. Kirja on täynnä yksityiskohtaista kuvausta, pohjapiirrustuksia ja erityisesti tätä kirjaa varten tehtyä kuvitusta. Cursum Perficio, Marilyn Monroe's Brentwood hacienda is the story of her final months in the first house she bought on her own. The house fascinates Marilyn fans for many reasons: it's seen as a sign of independence, a symbol of her personality and a personal project, her very own home. It's also the place where she died.
Marilyn had lived in New York while she was married to Arthur Miller. After their divorce in 1961, even thought she loved New York she needed a place in Los Angeles – after all, her work was there. She had also begun seeing a psychotherapist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, in Los Angeles, and had fallen in love with his Spanish style house. Marilyn wanted a similar house of her own. Dr. Greenson's home was built by Mr. and Mrs. Murray, but their residence there was short-lived. Mrs. Murray had befriended the Greensons, and Dr. Greenson suggested Marilyn employ her as a housekeeper. Marilyn did, and her first assignment was to find a home for Marilyn.
Marilyn loved the 2300 square foot Spanish hacienda at 12305 5th Helena Drive the minute she saw it. The location: perfect, only a short distance away from the studios and Dr. Greenson's house, yet peaceful and private as the street is a cul-de-sac. The garden: beautiful, lush with a pool. The house: simple, sturdy, with possibilities to restore it to its original Spanish glory. The neighbors: one university professor, one psychoanalyst, among others. Marilyn purchased 12305 5th Helena Drive for $77500 with a down payment of $42500 and monthly payments of $320 beginning on March 1st, 1962.
What I really love about this book is the feeling you get as if you were there with Marilyn, first house-hunting, then shopping for furniture, then making plans for renovation, the walking in the garden. From what I've seen in photos, 12305 5th Helena Drive is an unbelievably beautiful and quite simple home for a world famous movie star. The house has been renovated since Marilyn lived there, but if you want to get the feel of the house as it was in her time, Cursum Perficio is irreplaceable. The book will provide you with detailed descriptions, original artwork and floor plans of the home. Almost half of the book is (black and white) illustrations, which to me are essential in a book like this.
Not only does the book walk you through her house in Brentwood, it also provides interesting details of the house that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Marilyn and Arthur Miller, when Marilyn's priority was to focus on her marriage and family. This project is not very often talked about, and never in such vivid detail as here. The plans are very interesting but sadly, they never became reality.
Marilyn's Brentwood home has been on the market several times, most recently right now as I'm writing this. So, if you happen to have the extra $6,9 million, the house could be yours. (If I had it, I'd buy it in a second: even without the Marilyn connection the house is amazingly beautiful.) I've included a more recent photo of the house in this post so you can see what the house looks like today. It has been renovated but some details from Marilyn's time are still there. She also loved gardening, so I can't help but wonder if there are still flowers and trees she planted.
Oh and why Cursum Perficio? It comes from the four decorative tiles in front of the main entrance and translates as 'My journey ends here'.
