Gary Vitacco-Robles: Icon (volume 1&2)

Kirjan antia on myös psykologia: Vitacco-Robles pystyy oman työnsä kautta tarkastelemaan varsinkin Marilynin lapsuuden vaikutusta myöhempään elämään. Kirja ei kuitenkaan mene liian syvälle psykologiseen analyysiin.

Marilynin kohdalla täytyy tietää, mistä lähteestä mikäkin tieto on peräisin. Icon on ehdottomasti luotettava elämäkerta naisesta, josta on ehditty kirjoittaa hyvän lisäksi kaikenlaista huttua.

Icon on mielestäni elämäkertojen parhautta Michelle Morganin Private and Undisclosedin sekä Spoton vuonna 1993 julkaistun elämäkerran ohella. Miksi Spoto on näistä ainoa suomennettu? Vink vink kustantamoille: Private & Undisclosed sekä Icon todellakin ansaitsisivat tulla suomennetuiksi!

Is there anything new to say about Marilyn Monroe after all these years? Icon by Gary Vitacco-Robles proves there is. The two-volume, extensive biography covers Marilyn Monroe's life (and beyond) in a very interesting and well-written way.

If you are intimidated by the page count, don't be. Icon is so well-written that it doesn't feel at all too heavy, too long or too complicated. The text flows, whether the story of Marilyn Monroe is familiar or not. The total page count includes not only the biography itself but appendix, notes, bibliography and index - which naturally take a lot of pages in a work like this. I would have been happy even without the synopses of Marilyn's movies, but they will be of interest to those who haven't seen her movies.

The best thing is Marilyn comes off as a human being. Gary's writing shows that she has been treated unjustly by some biographers, but at the same times he doesn't put her on a pedestal. Marilyn is human, with flaws, but her humanity shines through.

The books are divided into chapters such as March-June 1952 or Something's Got To Give. It's easy to come back to this book and find that one piece of information you're looking for. I especially enjoyed all the information about how Marilyn spent her Christmases. Also, because of his profession, Gary is able to look at Marilyn and especially her childhood from a psychological aspect. Still, the book isn't all about psychology so as I mentioned, it doesn't get too heavy at any point.

With Marilyn, it's extremely important to consider the sources. Being a long-time Marilyn Monroe enthusiast, Gary knows what he's writing about and there are no suspicious sources in this book. I especially appreciated how he cites his sources so that it's always easy to check where his information comes from. Icon is definitely a trustworthy biography of a woman that has been mistreated by many.

Because this is a biography, there are no pictures, but I don't think this book even needs them. The text stands on its own, telling the story of Marilyn's life. The first volume covers her life up until 1956. Volume Two follows her life from 1956 to 1962 - and beyond. This book also lets you know what has been going on after Marilyn's death - what happened to her estate, the people in her life and the studio. It also discusses some popular conspiracy theories and shows exactly why they are not true. The final chapter of Volume 2 is simply wonderful, because you suddenly get to be with other fans in Marilyn's half-centennial memorial in 2012. It shows how Marilyn still lives on, in a way, touching the lives of so many people around the world. I wish I could have been there too. Who knows, maybe in 2022?

Icon has been a very ambitious project, and it is every bit as great as it should be. Icon has become my favorite Marilyn biography along with Michelle Morgan's Private and Undisclosed and Spoto's 1993 biography. I highly recommend it to anybody interested in Marilyn.
