Julien's Auctions Marilyn Monroe 2014 catalog

Sain tällä viikolla paketin Julien's Auctionsilta. Marraskuussa Julien's Auctions järjestää valtavan Marilyn Monroe -huutokaupan: kyseessä on kolmepäiväinen tapahtuma, ja huutokauppakatalogi on neliosainen setti. Aikani pähkäiltyäni tilasin lopulta katalogin, ja samalla myös parin vuoden takaisen Julien's Auctions Marilyn Monroe 2014 -katalogin. Se siis saapui postiin (marraskuun isot katalogit eivät ole vielä valmiita). Voiko huutokauppakatalogia edes sanoa kirjaksi?

Marilyn Monroe 2014 on pehmeäkantinen, 131-sivuinen katalogi, jonka kiiltävässä kannessa komeilee tietysti Marilyn. Sisällä on kuvia huutokauppakohteista hinta-arvioineen. Tässä tapauksessa koko katalogi on pelkkää Marilynia: on valokuvia, kirjeitä, vaatteita ja jopa röntgenkuva, eikä siinä vielä kaikki. Osa kohteista on nähty huutokaupoissa ennenkin, mutta nk. Lost Archivesin tavarat ovat ensimmäistä kertaa mukana.

Ja ovathan ne ihania. Osa esineistä on hyvin yksityisiä, kuten vaikkapa kirjeet Arthur Milleriltä tai Joe DiMaggiolta. Osa kirjeistä on sumennettu niin, ettei tekstistä saa selvää. Marilyn-tutkijaa se tietysti hermostuttaa, mutta ymmärrän kyllä keräilijän näkökulman. Myös osa valokuvista on erittäin pieniä, mutta mukana on myös suurikokoisia kuvia Marilynista, luettavia kirjeitä ja sähkeitä ja selkeitä kuvia muista esineistä.

Katalogi on kaunis, kiinnostava ja erinomainen lisä Marilyn-kokoelmiin. Kun kerran eräs havitelluimmista Marilyn-kirjoista on Christie's Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe – siis huutokauppakatalogi legendaarisesta vuoden 1999 Marilyn-huutokaupasta  – tämäkin katalogi on luettavissa Marilyn-kirjoihin. Loppujen lopuksi se antaa mahdollisuuden kurkistaa Marilynin elämään, ja niinhän parhaat kirjat tekevät.

I got a parcel from Julien's Auctions this week. You may already know, but there will be a huge Marilyn Monroe auction at Julien's in November – a three day event with a box set of four catalogs. After hesitating at first because of the price tag, I finally ordered the box set, along with the 2014 Julien's Auctions Marilyn Monroe catalog. That's what came in the mail (the November catalogs are not ready to ship yet). But can you even call a catalog a book?

The 2014 Marilyn Monroe is a soft back, 131-page catalog featuring MM on its glossy cover. Inside there are photos of the auction lots, ie. items for sale with price estimates. In this case, it's all about Marilyn: there are photos, letters, clothes, even a chest x-ray – the list goes on and on. Some of the items have been auctioned previously, but those from the Lost Archive are here for the first time.

And let's face it: the items are lovely. Some of them are very private, such as letters from Arthur Miller or Joe DiMaggio. Some letters have been blurred so that they remain a secret to everyone else but the person who buys them. As a Monroe researcher, this bugs me a bit, but at the same time I can understand the collector's viewpoint. Some of the contact sheet photos are also quite small, but there are also larger, clearer photos of Marilyn, readable letters and telegrams, and clear photos of other items.

The catalog is beautiful, interesting and a great addition to a MM collection. As one of the most sought after Marilyn books is Christie's Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe – an auction catalog from 1999, in my opinion this catalog can also be considered a Marilyn book. After all, it gives us a glimpse into Marilyn's life, and isn't that what the best books do.
