Joe Franklinin ja Laurie Palmerin Marilyn Monroe Story on alunperin julkaistu vuonna 1954. Se kuuluu siis ensimmäisiin Marilynista kirjoitettuihin kirjoihin. Koska kirja on julkaistu Marilynin eläessä, se ei tietenkään kerro koko tarinaa. Sen sijaan se antaa kiinnostavan kuvan siitä, millaisena Marilyn nähtiin tähteytensä huipulla.
Mielenkiintoista on, että Marilyn työsti samoihin aikoihin omaelämänkertaansa. Siitä syystä en voi olla vertailematta näitä kahta kirjaa keskenään. Nuoruuteni loppuu Koreanmatkaan, eli Marilyn on juuri mennyt naimisiin Joe DiMaggion kanssa. Avioliittoa DiMaggion kanssa pähkäillään Marilyn Monroe Storyssakin:

Nuoruuteni kuvaa nimensä mukaisesti Marilynin lapsuutta ja uran alkuaikoja paljon tarkemmin kuin Marilyn Monroe Story. Jim Dougherty tupsahtaa esiin jo parin ensimmäisen sivun jälkeen. Vanhanaikaisuus käy ilmi muutenkin: kirjan rakenne on hieman sekava ja kirjoitustyyli erilainen kuin nykyään. Kyseessä ei kuitenkaan ole mikään roskakirja, vaan Marilyniin suhtaudutaan pääasiassa varsin positiivisesti. Häntä ei nähdä vain seksikkäänä blondina vaan lahjakkaana näyttelijänä.
Marilyn Monroe Story on kiinnostava, koska se on ensimmäisiä Marilynista kirjoitettuja kirjoja. Se tarjoaa vilkaisun aikaan, jolloin Marilyn oli elossa ja suosionsa huipulla. Marilyn Monroe Story by Joe Franklin and Laurie Palmer was first published in 1954. It is one of the first books written about Marilyn. Because it was written and published during her lifetime, it does not tell the whole story. What it does is it gives you an interesting look at how Marilyn was viewed during the height of her fame.
It's interesting to note that Marilyn was working on her own autobiography at the same time. I can't help but compare the two. My Story ends with her trip to Korea, which means Marilyn had just gotten married with Joe DiMaggio. The possibility of marriage between the two is discussed also in Marilyn Monroe Story:
"I would hate to have her follow the Hollywood pattern of six months of marriage and then a quick divorce."
"With the right attitude and the proper approach, there is no reason why Miss Monroe can't make a happy Mrs. DiMaggio."
My Story also covers Marilyn's childhood and early career in more detail than Marilyn Monroe Story. We are introduced to Jim Dougherty after only a couple of pages. Joe DiMaggio is first mentioned before we're even halfway through the book. You can see very clearly exactly how famous Marilyn was during this time. There's even thoughts about the future: what will Marilyn be like in the 1960's? Is she just 'a passing fancy'? Will people be interested in seeing her in the movies continuously? (we of course know the answer to that one: 1) yes, and b) soon after, Marilyn moved to New York and made movies considerably less than before)
Marilyn is also compared to the earlier screen stars. Sometimes the book even starts to lecture: this is what Marilyn should do with her life and career. To me, that sounds a bit silly and old fashioned. The book is old fashioned in several ways: these days a book like this would be constructed differently, and of course the writing style isn't the same any more. But this book is not trash, it does not create unnecessary gossip and it views Marilyn mostly in a positive light. She's not seen only as a sexy blonde but a talented actress.
Marilyn Monroe Story is interesting, because it's one of the first books ever written about her. It offers a look at the time when Marilyn was alive and at the height of her fame. If you happen to see this book on sale somewhere around the internet, make sure you know beforehand if it's the original edition or the reproduction. The reproduction should be much more affordable.
