Pääsiäisreissulla junassa sain viimein luettua tämän kirjan, joka on kyllä hyllyssä istunut jo pari vuotta. Conversations with Marilyn on ehkä yksi kuuluisimmista Marilyn-kirjoista, ja se myös jakaa mielipiteitä. Osa ei usko keskustelujen koskaan tapahtuneen, osa ottaa Marilynin sanat kirjaimellisesti. Mikä sitten on totuus?

W. J. Weatherby tapasi Marilynin ensimmäisen kerran Sopeutumattomien kuvauksissa. Sitä ennen hän oli tavannut ohjaaja John Hustonin sekä käsikirjoittaja-kirjailija Arthur Millerin. Weatherby ihaili Milleriä eikä pitänyt tavasta, jolla lehdistö määritteli hänet vain "Herra Monroeksi". Tämän vuoksi hän suhtautui Marilyniinkin varauksella eikä itse asiassa ollut kovin kiinnostunut hänestä.

Conversations with Marilyn on kaikenkaikkiaan mielenkiintoinen pieni kirja, joka näyttää vähähdyksen naisesta Marilyn-imagon takana aikana, joka oli hänelle vaikea. Kirja ilmestyi ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1976, mutta sitä löytää käytettynä melko helposti.

During our Easter trip I finally managed to read this book from cover to cover. Conversations with Marilyn is probably one of the most well-known Marilyn books, and it is also one where opinions differ. Some people don't believe the conversations ever took place, some take Marilyn's words as literal quotes. What is the truth?

W. J. Weatherby first met Marilyn on location of the shooting of the Misfits. Before that, he had met director John Huston and screenwriter, author Arthur Miller. Weatherby admired Miller and despised the way the press had diminished him to "Mr Monroe". Because of this, he had some reservations about Marilyn and was not even that interested in her.

Marilyn had that special something. And that special something captured Weatherby as well as they chatted during the shooting of the Misfits, and later in New York. 1961 was a peculiar year in Marilyn's life: she and Miller had divorced, Misfits was released and Marilyn was drifting in New York, trying to figure out what the next step in her life should be. During that time she met Weatherby incognito in a bar, and they discussed life.

Marilyn asked the journalist not to write anything about her, at least not now - maybe later. Weatherby didn't take notes in front of Marilyn, but wrote everything down after the meetings. This is why you can't take Marilyn's words as if they're right from her mouth; however the thought behind the words comes off as very genuine and very Marilyn. Those who are more sceptic doubt that the conversations ever took place because Weatherby has never presented any documentation. Many feel that Marilyn's words, way of thinking and essence capture something so uniquely Marilyn that it is enough proof to believe these conversations actually took place, and I tend to agree. The actual conversations in this book are a very interesting read and give a new glimpse to Marilyn in 1961. But I also have two complaints: first of all, Weatherby doesn't even meet Marilyn until chapter seven, so the beginning is too long in my opinion. The second error is much worse: Weatherby trusts Robert Slatzer in the final chapter.

Conversations with Marilyn is a very interesting little book that gives us a flash of what Marilyn, the woman, was like in a time in her life which was not the easiest for her. The book was first published in 1976, but second hand copies are widely available online.
