Milton's Marilyn

Ensimmäisen viikon ja siten myös koko blogin ensimmäisenä kirjana on Milton's Marilyn. Minunhan siis piti lukea tämä viime viikon aikana ja myös kirjoittaa siitä jo silloin tänne, mutta kun... Olimme joululoman vietossa aina perjantai-iltaan asti, eikä mukana ollut ainuttakaan MM-kirjaa. Luin siis kirjan parissa päivässä, muiden touhujen lomassa. Ja näin ollen olen myöhässä tästäkin, niin kuin yleensä aina kaikkialta.

Mutta. Kirja on ihana. Hankin sen muutama vuosi sitten (taisi olla 2004) pitkään sitä toivottuani. Milton Greene on yksi kolmesta lempivalokuvaajastani (Sam Shaw'n ja Andre De Dienesin ohella), ja kirjaan on valittu todella upeita kuvia. Nykyään kaikki kuvat jo tietenkin kiertävät netissä, mutta on kuitenkin eri asia nähdä ne kirjassa. Erityisen hyvin edustettuna on Black Sitting (josta toivon kovasti, että julkaisevat joskus ihan erityisen kirjan, jossa olisi jokaikinen Black Sittingin kuva).

Kuvat ovat kirjan toisessa puolikkaassa, ja alkupuoli on tekstiä. Kirjoittajana on James Kotsilibas-Davis, ja hän kuvailee Miltonin ja Marilynin yhteistä uraa aina alkutapaamisesta välirikkoon asti. Sekä Milton että Marilyn olivat jo luoneet itselleen nimeä ennen kuin tapasivat toisensa v. 1953. Yhteistyöstä syntyi paitsi upeita valokuvia, myös tuotantoyhtiö Marilyn Monroe Productions. Marilyn myös asui Greenen perheen luona jonkin aikaa. Tekstissä lainataan sekä Miltonin että Marilynin hyvin tuntenutta lähipiiriä, esimerkiksi Amy Greeneä. Kirjan alkupuheen on kirjoittanut Milton Greenen poika Joshua Greene, joka nykyään restauroi isänsä valokuvia. Näitä valokuvia on runsaasti esillä Greenen nettisivuilla: Archives , jossa on kaikenlaisia kuvia sekä Milton's Marilyn , joka on nimensä mukaisesti keskittynyt Marilyn-kuviin.

Milton's Marilyn kuuluu ehdottomasti Marilyn-kirjojen parhaimmistoon, ja sitä voi suositella myös yleisesti valokuvateoksista pitävälle ihmiselle.

The first book of the week and therefore the first book of this whole book blog is Milton's Marilyn. I was supposed to read the book last week, but we were away on holiday and didn't come back until late Friday evening. So I read the book in about two days in the middle of all  the normal activities. And so I'm late from my own book blog, but I'm always late so that's no big news.

Back to the book. It is wonderful. I got it a couple of years ago (in 2004 if I remember right) after wishing for it for a long time. Milton H. Greene is among my top three favorite MM photographers (with Sam Shaw and Andre De Dienes) and the pictured selected for this book are really gorgeous. Of course you'll be able to see all of these pictures on the internet, but it's still different to see them in a book. Black Sitting is represented especially well (I'm hoping that someday they'll release a specific Black Sitting book with all the pictures from that sitting).

The pictures are part two of the book; part one is text written by James Kotsilibas-Davis. He writes about Milton and Marilyn's career from the beginning to the end. Both Milton and Marilyn had managed to make a name for themselves before they met each other in 1953. Together they produced not only fantastic photographs but also founded their own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. Marilyn also lived with the Greenes for a while. People who knew both Marilyn and Milton are quoted in the text, among them Amy Greene. The Acknowledgements and Introduction is written by Milton's son Joshua Greene, who these days restores his father's work. These photographs can be seen on

This book is definitely one of the best books on Marilyn Monroe. It can also be recommended to someone who generally enjoys brilliant photography.
