Marie Cahill: Forever Marilyn

Viime viikosta tapojani parantaen olen kovasti etuajassa tämän viikon kirjan kanssa. Kirjana oli siis Marie Cahillin Forever Marilyn, joka jatkaa "enimmäkseen kuvateos"-sarjaa. Cahillin teos ei ole kovin paksu, mutta mukava hyllyntäyttäjä kuitenkin.

Marilynin elämäntarina kerrotaan tiivistetysti kirjan alussa, yhdellä sivulla. Kuvista on kuitenkin kuvatekstit, joissa myös kerrotaan hieman Marilynin elämästä. Kirjassa ei ole mitään aikajanatiivistelmää, kirjaluetteloa, listaa elokuvista tms.

Kuvia kirjassa on Marilynin koko elämän varrelta, aina lapsuuskuvista Kennedyn syntymäpäiväjuhliin asti. Myös Marilynin haudasta, Walk Of Fame -tähdestä ja käden- ja jalanjäljistä Grauman's Chinese Theaterin edustalla on kuvat. Jokaisella aukeamalla on myös oma otsikkonsa, jonka ympärille kuvat keskittyvät. Growing Up -nimekkeen alla on kuvia Marilynistä lapsena ja Jim Doughertyn nuorena vaimona, Entertaining The Troops -aukeama on täynnä Korea-kuvia ja niin edelleen. Osa kuvista on sivun kokoisia, osa pienempiä ja osa vie koko aukeaman. Näistä aukeamankokoisista kuvista mielestäni erityisen kaunis on sivuilla 44-45 oleva kuva Marilynistä sohvalla.

Kirjassa on pari virhettä, jotka pistävät silmään heti. Sivulla 16 on kuvateksti, joka vapaasti suomennettuna kuuluu näin: "Hänen ensimmäinen pääroolinsa oli elokuvassa Ladies Of The Chorus, jossa hän esitti tanssijaa. Vaikka hän saikin positiivisia arvosteluja, Columbia ei uusinut hänen sopimustaan kuten ei Twenty Century Fox aikaisemmin." Muuten hyvä, mutta a) se on Twentieth, ei Twenty Century Fox, ja b) kuva on elokuvasta Piukat paikat. Teksti siis kertoo Marilynin uran alkupään elokuvasta, mutta kuva on yhdestä hänen tunnetuimmista elokuvistaan, jonka hän teki uransa loppupuolella. Hurjin virhe on kuitenkin sivulla 42. Kuvatekstikertoo vasemmanpuoleisesta kuvasta: "Tämä kuva Marilynistä poseeraamassa kameralle on raju kontrasti yläpuolella olevalle kuvalle, joka paljastaa Marilynin herkemmän puolen." Vasemmalla olevassa kuvassa ei edes ole Marilyn, vaan Jayne Mansfield!

Forever Marilyn on tiivistettynä ihan mukava peruskuvateos. Mitään maata järisyttävää ei kannata odottaa, mutta ei myöskään pidä hävetä, jos tämä hyllystä löytyy :)

I'm trying to better my habit and so I'm already writing about this week's book, and it's Thursday. The book is Forever Marilyn by Marie Cahill, which is "mostly a picture book" like some of the recent books I've read. Cahill's book doesn't have that many pages but it's a nice addition to a book collection.

The story of Marilyn's life is told very briefly in the beginning of the book, on just one page. There are some text about the pictures though, which tell a bit more about her life. The book doesn't have a timeline, bibliography, list of her movies etc.

The pictures cover Marilyn's whole life from childhood to the Kennedy birthday party. There are also pictures of Marilyn's grave, star on Walk Of Fame and hand and footprints in front of the Chinese Theater. Every page has its own title around which the photos are gathered. Under the title Growing Up there are pictures of her as a child and a young bride, under Entertaining The Troops she's in Korea and so forth. Some of the pictures take the whole page, some are smaller and some take even two pages. I especially like the picture on pages 44-45 where she's on the couch.

The book has a couple of mistakes that you can't miss. On page 16 it says: "Left: Her first leading role was in Ladies Of The Chorus (1948), in which she played the part of a dancer. Although she received favorable reviews, Columbia, like Twenty Century Fox, did not renew her contract." First of all, it's Twentieth, not Twenty Century Fox, and second of all, the picture is from Some Like It Hot. The messed her early movie with one of the most popular movies she ever did, and which she did toward the end of her career. The most outrageous mistake is on page 42. It says: "Left: This shot of Marilyn mugging for the camera provides a striking contrast to the photo above that reveals her vulnerable side." The woman on the picture on the left is not Marilyn at all, it's Jayne Mansfield!

To put it simply, Forever Marilyn is a nice picture book. Nothing special, but you don't have to be embarrassed either if you have this book :)
