Joskus hyvä kirja jää vaille ansaitsemaansa huomiota. Ehkä tämän kirjan kohdalla se johtuu siitä, että kyseessä on 1980-luvulla julkaistu kirja, ei siis viimeisin uutuus tai vanhoista vanhin, jotka saavat tällä hetkellä ehkä eniten huomiota vaikkapa netin keskusteluissa. Marilyn Lives! ei ole elämäkerta eikä pelkkä kuvateoskaan, mikä voi vaikuttaa sen saamaan huomioon.
Millainen kirja Marilyn Lives! sitten on? Kyseessä on lämminhenkinen katsaus Marilynin "elämään" hänen kuolemansa jälkeen. Oppenheimer kirjoittaa, kuinka "Marilyn edelleen, jopa 20 vuotta kuolemansa jälkeen kiinnostaa ihmisiä, ja hänestä on kirjotettu kymmeniä kirjoja". Näin yli kolmekymmentä vuotta kirjan ilmestymisen jälkeen havainto tuntuu jopa huvittavalta, sillä Marilyn ei edelleenkään ole menettänyt hohtoaan, ja hänestä julkaistujen kirjojen määrä on noussut satoihin ellei tuhansiin. Tuohon aikaan sitä ei tietenkään vielä voinut ennustaa.
Oppenheimer halusi koota teoksen siitä, kuinka Marilyn on vaikuttanut ihmisiin. Hän kertoo oman Marilyn-tarinansa, johon liittyvät olennaisesti Marilynin kuuluisa alastonkuva sekä Marilynin myytti. Kirjaa varten hän myös haastatteli muita Marilyn-faneja, jotka pääsevät kertomaan kukin oman tarinansa. Näitä tarinoita on hyvin mielenkiintoista lukea. Nykynäkökulmasta ajateltuna on kiinnostavaa, kuinka suurin osa tuon ajan Marilyn-faneista muistaa Marilynin elossa ja myös hänen kuolemansa. Tällä hetkellä iso osa faneista (kuten minäkin) on syntynyt Marilynin kuoleman jälkeen. Oppenheimerin kirja on itse asiassa minua vanhempi.
Kirjassa on myös runsaasti kuvia Marilynista. Suurin osa kuvista on mustavalkoisia, mutta mukana on myös joitain värikuvia. Nykyihmiselle kuvat eivät ole mitenkään harvinaisia, mutta toki edelleen kauniita. Lisäksi lopussa on varsinainen helmi: Oppenheimerin runo Marilynille. Olen samaa mieltä kuin hänen ystävänsä: Oppenheimerin olisi todellakin pitänyt lähettää runo Marilynille itselleen. Marilyn olisi varmasti pitänyt siitä.

Ikävä kyllä hän kuoli vuonna 1987, eikä siis nähnyt esimerkiksi Marilynin kuoleman 30-vuotismuistojuhlaa. Onneksi hän ehti julkaista Marilyn Lives! -kirjan, sillä se antaa kiinnostavan kuvan Marilynin "elämästä" 1980-luvun alussa. Ensi vuonna tulee kuluneeksi jo 55 vuotta Marilynin kuolemasta. Olisiko aika kypsä toiselle vastaavanlaiselle kirjalle?
Sometimes a good book doesn't get the attention it deserves. Maybe in this book's case it's because it was published in the 1980's, so it's not one of the newest ones or the oldest ones, which tend to receive more attention. Also Marilyn Lives! is not a traditional biography or a full-on photobook.
What is Marilyn Lives! like then? It is a heartwarming look at Marilyn's "life" after her death. Oppenheimer writes how "even after 20 years of her passing, Marilyn still holds the interest of people and dozens of books have been written about her". Today, after 30 years of the book's publication this observation seems almost comical: after all Marilyn still hasn't lost her appeal and the amount of books published about her is in the hundreds, perhaps even thousands. But in 1982, who could predict that?
Oppenheimer wanted to compile a book about how Marilyn has moved people. He tells his own Marilyn story, which includes her famous nude photo and her myth. He also interviews several Marilyn fans, who each get to tell their own story. It's lovely to read these stories. It's also very interesting to note that most Marilyn fans of that time remember Marilyn alive, and also remember when she died. These days many fans were born after Marilyn's death (including me; I'm younger than Oppenheimer's book).
There are many photos of Marilyn. Most of them are black and white, but some are in color. Nowadays none of the photos are rare, but they're still beautiful. Also included is a real treasure: Oppenheimer's poem to Marilyn. I really agree with his friends: he should have sent it to her. She would have loved it.
Marilyn Lives! is a heartwarming book about Marilyn's impact 20 years after her passing. When reading his book I wondered what Oppenheimer thought of her continuing presence. Unfortunately he died in 1987, never even seeing the 30th anniversary of her passing. Luckily he published Marilyn Lives! since it gives an interesting view of Marilyn in the 1980's. Next year it will be 55 years of Marilyn's passing. Is the time ripe for another such book?
