Vuonna 1999 Christie's -huutokauppatalo piti vuosisadan huutokaupan: huomattavat määrät Marilyn Monroen jäämistöä, mukaanlukien vaatteita, koruja ja astioita, huutokaupattiin usean päivän aikana lokakuussa 1999. On ymmärrettävää, että tällainen huutokauppa herätti monenlaisia ajatuksia: toisaalta fanit innostuivat mahdollisuudesta omistaa jotain Marilynille kuulunutta, toisaalta huutokauppaa pidettiin rahastuksena ja Marilynin tavaroiden olisi kuulunut päätyä kokoelmaksi museoon. Koska katalogia sai vain huutokaupan ajan, siitä on itsessään muodostunut keräilyharvinaisuus. Silloin tällöin sitä näkee kohtuuhinnalla eBayssa tai Amazonissa, ja sillä tavalla nappasin oman kappaleeni. Se vastasi kuvitelmiani ja jopa ylitti ne.
Kirja kuuluu niihin, joita selaillessa tuntee pääsevänsä vähän lähemmäksi todellista Marilynia, joka eli niin tavallista elämää kuin julkisuudeltaan pystyi. Personal Property on täynnä kuvia niin koruista, keittiövälineistä, lasitavarasta, vaatteista sekä käsikirjoituksista. Mukana on sellaisia helmiä kuin ns. Happy birthday -iltapuku ja meksikolainen villatakki, joka on tuttu George Barrisin kuvista. Marilynin omat vaatteet ovat kauniita, mutta myös mukavan tavallisia – ja monia niistä voisi käyttää edelleen.
Kirjan avulla konkretisoituu se, millaisten tavaroiden ympäröimänä Marilyn eli. Tässä on myös kääntöpuolensa: tuntuu kummalliselta katsella toisen ihmisen jäämistöä, henkilökohtaisia tavaroita, ja tuntuu myös surulliselta, etteivät ne tavallaan kuulu kenellekään.

In 1999 Christie's auction house held the auction of the century: personal property of Marilyn Monroe. The auction, which included items such as her personal clothes, jewellery and kitchenware, took several days in October 1999. It is understandable that an auction like this was received with mixed feelings: on the other hand, many fans were excited by the possibility of owning something that was actually Marilyn's, but many also felt she was being turned into a moneymaker and all of her belongings should have gone to a museum. The legendary sale also produced a legendary catalog, which is not a little booklet but a huge, hardcover book: Christie's Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe.
Because the catalog was available only during the auction, it has become a sought after collectable. Occasionally you can find a reasonably priced copy on eBay or Amazon, which is how I managed to get my copy. And it was everything I had hoped for and more.
This book is one of those that make you feel like you get a little bit closer to the real Marilyn, the woman who lived her life as normally as she could with her enormous fame. Personal Property is filled with photos of items such as jewelry, kitchenware, glassware, clothing and scripts. Included are such gems as the Happy Birthday dress, or the Mexican sweater we know from George Barris' photos. Marilyn's clothes are beautiful but also normal in a nice way – and many of them you could still wear today. This book lets you see what kind of things Marilyn was surrounded by. When you think about it, it's also sad: this is someone's personal property, but it doesn't really belong to anyone anymore.
Marilyn once said: "I knew I belonged to the public and to the world, not because I was beautiful or even talented, but because I never belonged to anyone or anything else." In a way, this is true with her property also. They all belong to her public and to the world. Luckily, some collectors generously display their Marilyn items in exhibitions all around the world, sharing them with all of her fans. Her property lives on, just as Marilyn does in our hearts.
