Tämä on ehdottomasti pienin Marilyn-kirjoista. Olen rohkea enkä rajaa määritelmää koskemaan vain omaa kokoelmaani, vaan kaikkia Marilyn-kirjoja koskaan ikinä. Tähänkin kirjaan liittyy sellainen muisto, että ostin sen Kalifornian reissulta Riversidesta kesällä 2001. Samalla matkalla sain painaa käteni Marilynin kädenjälkiin Kiinalaisen teatterin edessä Hollywoodissa - ja ne sopivat Marilynin käsiin täsmälleen.
Kirja on siis todella pieni; otin siitä kuvan kynän vieressä, ja kynähän näyttää aivan jättiläiseltä. Kirja on kuitenkin kovakantinen ja siinä on sekä tekstiä että kuvia, joten kyseessä on aika hauska pieni kirja. Se kertoo Marilynin (tutun) tarinan jaettuina eri ajanjaksojen mukaisesti lukuihin: Introduction, Early Years (1926-44), The Dream Begins (1944-50), The Dream Comes True (1950-55), The New Marilyn Emerges (1955-60), The Final Act: The End of the Legend (1960-62), Afterword and Filmoraphy. Näinkin pieneen kirjaan on saatu mahtumaan yllättävän paljon: Norma Jeane työskenteli anoppinsa kanssa tehtaassa, Marilyn opiskeli näyttelemistä Micheal Checkovin johdolla, Milton Greene ja Marilyn perustivat oman tuotantoyhtiön... Lopussa mainitaankin, että Marilyn haluaisi luultavimmin tulla muistetuksi ihmisenä, joka teki kovasti töitä saavuttaakseen unelmansa.
Kirja ei siis maalaa kuvaa Marilynista tyhmänä blondina. Loppupuolella puhutaan ehkä liikaa Marilynin ongelmista, mutta pääasiassa teksti on varsin positiivista. Kirjassa on myös melko runsaasti kuvia. Ne ovat tunnettuja, mutta eivät kaikkein pahimmin kulutettuja ja hyvälaatuisia. Kaikenkaikkiaan pikku kirjanen on hauska lisä Marilyn-kirjakokoelmaan - ja mahtuu varmasti pieneenkin käsilaukkuun mukaan :)
This has to be the smallest Marilyn book. I am not even going to say "smallest book in my collection", I mean smallest Marilyn book ever. I have a special memory about this book: I bought it in Riverside, California, in the summer of 2001. During that same trip I got to try my hands on Marilyn's handprints outside the Chinese Theater in Hollywood - and they matched perfectly.
The book is extremely small. I took a picture of it next to a pen, and the pen looks like a giant. However, it's a hardcover book with text and photos, so it's a fun little book. It tells Marilyn's (familiar) story divided into chapters: Introduction, Early Years (1926-44), The Dream Begins (1944-50), The Dream Comes True (1950-55), The New Marilyn Emerges (1955-60), The Final Act: The End of the Legend (1960-62), Afterword and Filmoraphy. Considering that the book is so small, it contains surprisingly detailed information: Norma Jeane working with her mother-in-law in a factory, Marilyn studying acting with Michael Chekov, Milton Greene and Marilyn with their own production company... It's mentioned in the end that Marilyn would most likely have been remembered as a person who worked very hard to achieve her dream.
The book does not paint a picture of Marilyn as a dumb blonde. Towards the end her problems get a little too much attention, but overall the text is positive. The book also has quite many pictures. They're not rare, but they're not all overused either. The quality is good. All in all, this little book is a nice addition to a Marilyn book collection - and will definitely fit into even the smallest handbag!
