John Vachon: Marilyn August 1953: The Lost Look Photos

Kipitin eilen postiin läpi tuulen ja tuiverruksen saadakseni paketin, joka oli vielä edeltäneenä päivänä seikkaillut Norjassa. Kotiin päästyäni kuorin paketista esiin kaksi tilaamaani Marilyn-kirjaa. Toinen oli Lois Bannerin ja Mark Andersonin odotettu yhteistyö MM - Personal, josta enemmän myöhemmin. Toinen oli John Vachonin Marilyn August 1953: The Lost Look Photos.

John Vachon lähetettiin kuvaamaan Marilyniä, kun tämä oli Joki jolta ei ole paluuta -elokuvan kuvauspaikalla Kanadassa. Vachon työskenteli Look-lehdelle, joka tahtoi kuviin melkeinpä kaikki Kanada-kliseet: luonnon, karhut, metsänvartijat... Vachon pettyi, kun vain muutama kuva lopulta julkaistiin lehdessä. Harmi, sillä kuvat ovat ihania.

Marilyn oli satuttanut jalkansa kuvauksissa, joten suurimmassa osassa kuvista hänen jalassaan on kipsi. Tämä ei kuitenkaan haittaa. Vachonin kuvat tuovat esiin sitä "todellista Marilyniä", vaikka mukana on selvästi Hollywoodin hassutuksiakin. Marilyn seisoo kainalosauvoihin nojaten uima-altaan reunalla bikinit päällä, toisessa jalassa kipsi ja toisessa korkokenkä. Kipsi ei kuitenkaan estänyt häntä istumasta hiihtohissin kyytiin.

Kaikki kuvat ovat mustavalkosia, mikä sopii hyvin kirjan yleisilmeeseen. Vachon kuvasi Marilyniä rakastuneena Joe DiMaggion seurassa, rupattelemassa puhelimessa, täytetyn karhun syleilyssä sekä uima-altaalla. Lisäksi kirjassa on tietoa John Vachonista sekä hänen kirjeitään vaimolleen. Kirja ei ole erityisen paksu, mutta hyvin mukava lisä Marilyn-kuvista kiinnostuneelle.



Yesterday I went to the post office through wind and snow to get my parcel that had been in Norway just the previous day. When I got back home I opened it and took out the two Marilyn books I had ordered. One was MM - Personal by Lois Banner and Mark Anderson - more about that later. The other was Marilyn August 1953: The Lost Look Photos by John Vachon.

John Vachon was sent to photograph Marilyn when she was in Canada filming The River Of No Return. Vachon was working for Look magazine, and he had to include almost every Canadian cliché in the photos: the mountains, the bears, the rangers... Vachon was disappointed when Look only published a couple of his pictures. That's really a shame, because the pictures are beautiful.

Marilyn had hurt her foot during filming, and you can see her wearing a cast. This doesn't take away from the photos. Vachon manages to capture "the true Marilyn", even if there are some Hollywood madness in the photos as well. Marilyn is standing by a swimming pool with her crutches, wearing a bikini and high heels except on the foot she has the cast. The cast didn't stop her from going on top of a mountain.

All the pictures are black and white, which goes well with the style of the book. Vachon's photos show Marilyn in love with Joe DiMaggio, talking on the phone, in the arms of a stuffed bear and by the swimming pool. The book also has information on Vachon as well as his letters to his wife. This isn't a very big book, but a very nice addition if you're interested in Marilyn photos.
