Nicki Giles: Marilyn Album

Hyvät ihmiset, olette ehkä huomanneet joitain pieniä muutoksia blogissa. Ajattelin näet panostaa kuvapuoleen vähän enemmän (koska meillä on uusi hieno skanneri). Siksi tuossa yläpuolella on tuommoinen sinisävyinen kuvakin nykyään pelkän tekstin sijasta. Eikös ole hieno, nimim. Ihan ite tein.

Kannattaa myös katsella vanhoja blogikirjoituksia, nimittäin sitä kuvatusosastoa on niissäkin lisää (ja tulee lisää koko ajan). Koska meillä on se uusi hieno skanneri, minä pystyn jopa skannaamaan tänne kuvia kirjoista, joista kirjoittelen. Ainakin silloin, kun Bloggeri sattuu olemaan hyvällä päällä.

Kolmanneksi (?) tunnustan, että alkuperäinen ideani lukea 52 kirjaa vuodessa ei kyllä tule toteutumaan tämän vuoden puitteissa. Varmaan olen itse viimeinen, joka sen huomasi. Voisin sanoa, että se johtuu siitä, että vuosi on ollut vähemmän tavallinen ja että kaikenlaista on tapahtunut (mm. kesäaikaan en ollut kovin kauheasti kotona), millä on suora vaikutus kirjojen lukemiseen, koska niinhän se menee. Mutta voin myös sanoa, että tässä vaiheessa vuotta en näe mitään riemua siinä, että luen väkisellä hirveän nopeasti läjän kirjoja. Parempi vaan pitää tahti rauhallisempana. Sitä paitsi silloinhan minä saan kirjoitella tänne ensi vuonnakin :) Eikä sitä tiedä, vaikka nyt aikarajan poistuttua alkaisin lukea kirjo

ja tiuhemmin, koska minun ei ole PAKKO tehdä niin.

Sitten itse asiaan, eli Nicki Gilesin Marilyn Albumiin. Muutama vuosi sitten siitä otettiin uusi painos, ja silloin minä sen bongasin kirjakaupasta. Se tapahtui suunnilleen näihin aikoihin vuodesta, eli piti ensin varmistaa, etten ollut saamassa kirjaa joululahjaksi. Kun en ollut, niin hankin sen itse.

Marilyn Album on kuvateos, melkoisen kookas sellainen ja aika hyväkin. Suurin osa kuvista on mustavalkoisia, mutta kyllä niitä värikuviakin on. Kuvia on huomattavan runsaasti, mutta niiden koko vaihtelee. Joskus kuva vie koko sivun, eli on todella iso, mutta joskus samalle sivulle on laitettu kolme-neljäkin kuvaa. Kuvat ovat enimmäkseen Marilynin elokuvista sekä muista julkisista tapahtumista, niin kuin monesti kuvateoksissa on tapana. Tekstiä kirjassa ei ole kovin paljon, ja siitäkin noin puolet on kuvatekstejä. Mutta toisaalta, tällaisissa kirjoissa teksti ei olekaan pääasiassa, vaan vanhan sanonnan mukaan kuvat saavat kertoa enemmän kuin tuhat sanaa.

Marilyn Album on hyvä peruskuvateos, joka esittelee Marilynin eri vaiheita. Tällaisia peruskuvateoksia on muitakin, mutta Marilyn Albumin vahvuutena on kuvien runsaus, jonka ansiosta mukaan mahtuu muitakin kuin niitä perusotoksia. Toisin sanoen hyvä lisä kirjahyllyyn tai hyvä vaihtoehto esimerkiksi aloittelijalle, joka haluaa kuvien puolesta vähän kaikkea. Suosittelen.

 at some of the old posts as well, because they now contain more pictures (and more on the way). Since we now have that shiny new scanner I'm able to scan pictures of the books I'm reviewing. At least when Blogger is in a good mood.

And I have a confession to make. My original idea of reading 52 books in a year isn't going to work out. I believe all of you saw that coming, I've just tried to hold on to that idea desperately. I could say that the reason to this is because the year has been somewhat unordinary and all kinds of things have happened (like me not spending that much time at home during the summer) which of course has affected my reading, because that is true. I could also tell you that at this point of the year I see no point in reading a huge pile of books in a hurry. It's better to keep a slow pace. And that makes it possible for me to still keep this blog next year :) Who knows, maybe now that I don't have this huge deadline I'll actually start reading those books more quickly, because I don't HAVE to read them fast.

Off to the main subject, which is Marilyn Album by Nicki Giles. Some time ago they had a new edition and I spotted it in a bookstore. Because it happened during this time of the year I had to make sure that I wasn't going to get it for Christmas, before I bought it for myself.

Marilyn Album is a photo book, quite a large and good one. Most of the pictures are black and white, but there are color photos too. There are tons of photos, but their sizes vary. Sometimes a photo take up the whole page (and be huge), sometimes there are three or four photos in one page. Most of the pictures are from her movies and other public events, as often is the case in this kind of books. There's not a lot of text in this book, but on the other hand, that's not the point of a book like this. Let the photos speak for themselves.

Marilyn Album is a good basic photo book showcasing the different phases of Marilyn's life. This is not the only such book, but it has lots of pictures, so some of them are not the usual ones. It's a good addition to your bookshelf, or for example a starting fan, who wants a bit of everything. Recommended.
