Marilyn In Her Own Words -nimisiä kirjoja on luultavasti useampikin kuin yksi. Tämä on Neil Grantin kokoama 64-sivuinen kirja 1990-luvun alusta. Etukannessa on tyypillinen glamour-kuva, ja takakannessa kuva Marilynistä sängyssä sekä lausahdus: "I am not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful." ("En ole kiinnostunut rahasta. Haluan vain olla ihmeellinen.")

Lausahdukset, joita Marilyn on sanonut, ovatkin kirjassa tärkeässä osassa. Niitä on siroteltu pitkin kirjaa, yleensä kuvien yhteyteen. Lausahdusten kanssa on monesti oltava varuillaan: monet lausahdukset, joita väitetään Marilynin sanomiksi, eivät ole tulleet hänen suustaan. Joskus myös hänen roolihahmojensa lausahdukset liitetään Marilyniin ikään kuin Marilyn itse olisi sanonut niin. Itse en tiedä kirjan lausahduksista niin paljon, että osaisin sanoa, onko Marilyn todellakin sanonut ne kaikki. Onhan se mahdollista. Osa lausahduksista on sellaisia, että ainakin toivoo Marilynin sanoneen niin.

Kuvia kirjassa on melko paljon ottaen huomioon sen koon. Kuvat ovat pääasiassa Marilynin uran ajalta, mutta mukana on yksi lapsuudenkuva ja yksi kuva Doughertyjen häistä. Osa kuvista on sivun kokoisia, osa pienempiä. Mielestäni kuvat on valittu todella hyvin.

Kirjassa on lyhyt elämänkertanen, joka kertoo tutun tarinan perheestä toiseen heitellystä tytöstä, josta tulee teini-iässä kaunis nuori vaimo, joka kiinnostuukin mallintöistä ja näyttelemisestä ja avioliitto loppuu. Nuori nainen saa sopimuksen, muuttaa nimensä Marilyn Monroeksi, tekee ahkerasti töitä, mutta joutuu työttömäksi. Uusi sopimus on kuitenkin edessä, samoin kuin näyttelemisen opinnot, alastonposeeraus, Johnny Hyde sekä pienet kauneusleikkaukset. Vähitellen maine alkaa levitä, mutta otetaanko hänet vakavasti vai onko hän vain hassunhauska seksipommi? Tähteysajan elokuvia käydään myös jonkin verran läpi, samoin kuin avioliitot Joe DiMaggion ja Arthur Millerin kanssa. Myös tuotantoyhtiö Marilyn Monroe Productions mainitaan, sekä opinnot Actor's Studiossa. Kun liitto Millerin kanssa alkaa oireilla, esille astuu Yves Montand, ja tästä päästään jo Sopeutumattomiin ja tämän jälkeen ehkä Marilynin elämän synkimpään vaiheeseen. Sen jälkeen tulevat Kennedyn juhlat ja viimeinen elokuva, kunnes Marilyn löydetään kuolleena elokuussa 1962. Kirjan luvut on nimetty hauskasti Marilynin elokuvien mukaan: As Young As You Feel, There's No Business Like Show Business, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Something's Got To Give.

Suurempia erheitä kirjassa ei ole, mitä nyt nimi kirjoitetaan kirjassa Norma Jean, kun aito versio on Norma Jeane. Kyseenalaistaisin myös sen, makasiko Marilyn miesten kanssa sen vuoksi, että he voisivat hyödyttää häntä jotenkin. Mutta jos nämä ovat kirjan miinuspuolia, kirjassa on paljon hyvää. Marilyn In Her Own Words - there must be more than one book with this title. This one is compiled by Neil Grant, has 64 pages and is from the beginning of the 1990's. In the front cover there's a typical glamour shot of Marilyn, and in the back there's another photo of her in bed and a quote: "I am not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful."

Quotes from Marilyn are an important part of this book. They are all over the book, usually where there's also a picture. You have to be cautious with quotes: many quotes that are said to be from Marilyn never came out of her mouth. Sometimes even lines she said in movies are used as if they came from Marilyn the real person. I'm not an expert on this field, so I'm not one to say whether all the quotes on this book are actually real Marilyn quotes. It is possible. At least some of them are quotes I hope Marilyn has said.

There are quite a lot of pictures considering the size of the book. They are mainly from her career, but there's one childhood photo and one photo from the Dougherty's wedding. Some of the pictures take up a whole page, some are smaller. I think the pictures have been chosen very well.

The book also has a short biography that tells the familiar story. Little girl lives in foster families, becomes a beautiful teenage bride, takes an interest in modeling and acting and the marriage is over. The young woman gets a contract, changes her name to Marilyn Monroe, works hard but the contract is not renewed. The new contract is ahead, as well as acting lessons, posing nude, Johnny Hyde and minor cosmetic surgery. She becomes famous, but is she taken seriously or only seen as a funny sexbomb? Taking a look at her stardom movies and her two marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller. Her production company Marilyn Monroe Productions is mentioned, as well as her studies at the Actor's Studio. When her marriage with Miller begins to fall apart, along cames Yves Montand, and this leads us to The Misfits and then to probably the darkest part of her life. After that the Kennedy party and her final movie, and then she's found dead in August 1962. The chapters are named after Marilyn's movies: As Young As You Feel, There's No Business Like Show Business, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Something's Got To Give.

There are not a lot of mistakes in the book. Her name is spelled Norma Jean, when in reality it was Norma Jeane. I'd also question if she really slept with men because she felt they might be useful. If these are the bad things in the book, there are also a lot of good things. It is a very basic MM book, nothing extra special but very nice to have.
